This means that the conclusion is introduced as a strong claim for the position which you’re advocating. You then argue against that claim with your evidence, using just as much evidence as is necessary to support and further your own position. This isn’t a hard and fast rule, but it’s long been the traditional version. In a later essay I will discuss the problems with this model of debate.
Argumentative essays are generally assigned to one author, or to some writers who have very similar opinions on a particular topic. In a common mission the chosen writer will create an essay that presents a position based on the facts and arguments supplied in an earlier essay. The objective of the exercise is to determine which of both items is much more popular.
